Deleting Field and Index Definitions

To delete a field or index definition, use the general procedure described on the previous page and choose the Delete option.

The selected field or index name appears at FIELD in the above prompt. Pressing <CANCEL> or Enter, or typing "N" terminates the Delete action without deleting anything. The field or index definition can only be deleted by typing "Y" at this prompt.

Viewing Field and Index Data

The View option displays the data of the selected alias for one complete data record (Field, View), or for the indexed data fields (Index, View) and can be advanced one record at a time. However, the data cannot be modified.

The following are View screen options:

Next

Moves the display forward one record.

Prior

Moves the display backward one record.

Browse

Moves the cursor into the data to control scrolling when there are more fields than lines on the screen or when fields are longer than the display line.

Jump

When viewing Field data, Jump moves the display forward or backward a specified number of records. When viewing Index data, it moves the display forward or backward to a specified primary, or partial primary, index. For example, jumping to the first one or two letters of an alphabetical index.

Toggle

Switches the display between character and hexadecimal.

In defining a data dictionary for an existing file, use the Field, Guess option to set up the initial field definitions with numeric field names, or use the Index, Load option to set up indices if the data file is a true MKEYED file.

The View option displays the data with one field per line. Data displayed this way provides the information to adjust the field definitions and rename the fields mnemonically.

The bottom line of the screen contains prompting information about the currently selected option and which function keys to use. Pressing <CANCEL> returns to the Field Options or Index Options screen.

Note that if additional fields and/or indices have been added to an existing data file, the information cannot be viewed. First, exit the DD Editor and remake the data file. The DD Editor does not remake files.
