Understanding GL Posting Methods
The General Ledger Posting method determines how the General Ledger will post your transaction details. There are three types of methods that you can choose from. Transactions can be posted by accounting period, by transaction date, or posting to the General Ledger can be disabled.
1. Post By Period
Fiscal period posting determines the period based on the current period and year of the subledger. Transactions with dates that occur prior to the current application period are posted to the current application period. Transactions with dates prior to the current general ledger period are posted to the current general ledger period. Transactions with dates after the current application period are posted to the calculated period/year in which they fall.
If the Post to Locked Periods? field is marked in the Journal ID Codes maintenance task, any transaction using that journal ID code with a transaction date that falls into a prior locked period is posted to that period.
Warnings are displayed during entry and printed on registers if dates are entered that would cause a general ledger posting to fall outside the range of current and/or next application period.
2. Post By Date
Posting transactions by date will use the date of the transaction, regardless of the subledger period. Transactions with dates that occur prior to the current application period or current general ledger period are posted to the calculated period/year in that they fall. Transactions with dates after the current application period are posted to the calculated period/year in that they fall.
If the Post to Locked Periods? field is marked in the Journal ID Codes maintenance task, any transaction using that journal ID code with a transaction date that falls into a prior locked period is posted to that period.
Warnings are displayed during entry and included on registers if dates are entered that would cause a general ledger posting to fall outside the range of current and/or next application period.
3. No Posting
No general ledger transactions are generated. Choosing this posting method’ effectively disables the interface between General Ledger and all other installed modules. No general ledger information is prompted for and/or processed. A typical application for this setting is a multi-company installation where the general ledger is being used by some companies and not by others.

Prior Fiscal Year Closed? checkbox... This parameter reflects whether the year has been closed by the Year End Update task from the GL Period End Processing menu. At year-end, it is possible to continue processing without completing this task. The flag will indicate whether the year was completed or whether beginning balances were brought forward while waiting for closing entries. This flag is initially set as 'marked'. It may not be changed, as it is crucial in controlling the year end process. Note that when the prior fiscal year is NOT closed it changes the years referenced by the Default Display Columns. In that case, "Next" refers to the current fiscal year, "Current" refers to the prior fiscal year, and "Prior" refers to the fiscal year prior to the prior fiscal year.
Auto-adjust Feb for Leap Year checkbox... Enter whether or not a period end date of February 28 should be automatically adjusted to the 29th on Leap Years. A period end date of February 29 is always adjusted to the 28th on non-Leap Years.
Create next fiscal yr calendar checkbox... Enter whether or not to create a new fiscal calendar for the next year that matches the current fiscal calendar when the last period of the fiscal year is closed.
